First Carrier To Sell Seat Upgrades Onboard
Orlando-based low-cost carrier AirTran Airways introduced two
new policies this week... one of which is sure to be met with
groans from customers.
The airline announced Tuesday it will join the hordes of other
domestic airlines in charging $15 for the first checked item of
luggage. Frequent fliers and travelers who upgrade to Business
Class will be exempt from the added fee, as well as from the
existing $25 second-bag fee.
Speaking of Business Class fliers, AirTran also announced new
ways for customers to purchase those upgraded seats. In the past,
"normal" (read, non-premium) travelers were not able to purchase
AirTran's upgraded seating until they checked in at the ticket
counter for their flight... but now, customers will be able to buy
the seats when checking in online.
In a related move, AirTran also announced it will offer
passengers the option of buying the upgraded seats at time of
boarding... or even in flight.
Business Class seats run from an additional $49-$99, depending
on the length of the flight. The upgrade -- a novelty in the
low-cost segment -- offers wider seats with more legroom, as well
as complimentary cocktails and 'premium' snacks, according to the
airline.
"By adding these new innovations, AirTran Airways is striving to
always create value for our customers - even those who want to see
the Business Class product before they purchase. Now they have the
opportunity to do just that," said Tad Hutcheson, VP of marketing
and sales. "We are winning new customers every day as a result of
our spacious Business Class."
As we said earlier, the upgrade also waives checked baggage
charges... though AirTran did not specify how, or whether,
passengers who upgrade after check-in would be reimbursed for any
luggage fees.
