Sports Complex Could Be Coming To Land Near Mesa, AZ's Falcon Field

Aviation And Aerospace Businesses Still Primary Focus, City Leaders Say

Officials in Mesa, AZ are eyeing land near Falcon Field Airport for a possible sports complex, along with aviation, aerospace, and defense-related businesses.

The idea was floated at a city planning and zoning board meeting last month, according to a report from arizona.newszap.com. Jaye O'Donnel, deputy director of economic development for the city of Mesa, said that while the more traditional aviation uses are still the main focus for development near the airport, there was also potential "from a sports-tourism perspective" for the 35-square-mile tract.

A report posted on the city's website indicates that nearby lakes, parks, rivers, and other outdoor attractions could bring outfitters and sporting equipment manufacturers to the mix of businesses at the site. The area is anchored by a GA airport and has a well-trained workforce.

"With the vibrant general-aviation airport at its core, we think the area offers numerous opportunities for enhancing the employment centers and developing sports tourism and creating new jobs through organic growth,” Ms. O’Donnell said.
