The Sights of Lakeland 2004: Juxtaposition - Homebuilt Style

Homebuilt Camping is always great fun to visit; you are guaranteed to meet interesting people and see, and hear about, their interesting planes. While like types (in both senses of the word) often cluster together, it's also possible to find some interesting juxtapositions. I thought that this was one of those.

The machine on the left is a Turbine Legend, a sleek composite speedster powered by a Walter turbine. One the right: the Barrows Bearhawk, a plane designed to haul big loads into little places. At a glance you couldn't imagine two things much more dissimilar that both are called "experimental amateur-built airplane."

But in the end the machines do have the important things in common: all offer specific capabilities not available from normal experimentals, and all provide the builder with a great deal of pride of construction and ownership. Maybe they aren't so different as they look at first glance.
