NTSB Prelim: Quickie Q2

(Pilot) Was Unable To Affect A Change In The Power Loss Event

Location: Laramie, WY Accident Number: WPR23LA016
Date & Time: October 14, 2022, 14:43 Local Registration: C-GDHK
Aircraft: Quickie Q2 Injuries: 1 None
Flight Conducted Under: Part 91: General aviation - Positioning

On October 14, 2022, about 1443 mountain standard time, an amateur built Quickie Q2 airplane, Canadian registration C-GDHK, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Laramie, Wyoming. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.

According to the pilot, during the climb out from the Laramie Regional Airport (LAR) Laramie, Wyoming, the engine experienced a partial loss of power. The pilot verified that the fuel system, ignition, and carb heat were functioning, but was unable to affect a change in the power loss event. Unable to maintain altitude, the pilot determined that a highway was the safest location to land. Upon touchdown, the airplane bounced then departed the paved lane and came to rest in an adjacent ditch. The pilot reported that a mechanical malfunction occurred that caused the partial power loss.

The airplane came to rest upright. The right canard separated about midspan, and the fuselage exhibited a large crack forward of the empennage. The airplane was recovered to a secured facility for further examination.
