New Cheyenne, Wyoming Passenger Terminal Delayed

Terminal Will Not Be Completed Until Late 2018

Officials have delayed construction of a new passenger terminal at Cheyenne Regional Airport (KCYS), delaying the opening of the facility until late 2018.

The website wyomingnews.com reports that the primary reason for the nine-month delay is the failure of Congress to release FAA AIP grant money in time to meet the original construction schedule.

The grants ... totaling $7 million ... were expected to be received in May, but the monies were not released until July. That has pushed the beginning of construction until April of next year in an effort to avoid weather issues.

Airport Director of Aviation Tim Barth said that he did not necessarily characterize the shift as a "delay" as much as "adjusting the timeline." Barth said everything was in place to make the project happen on the original timeline, but with a public works project of this size, the design and construction team did not want to weather to ruin the soil where the building will be built.

The overall project is expected to cost some $15.5 million, which includes the terminal, apron, and parking lot. Along with the AIP grants, the project will be funded with a sixth-cent sales tax, and grants from the Wyoming Aeronautics Board and Wyoming Business Council.
