OU Freshman Flies Her Plane To College

Ariel Pollard Is Part Of A Flying Family

Most college freshman can't even take a car on campus. But Ariel Pollard didn't have to be concerned about getting a campus parking pass when she arrived for the start of classes at Oklahoma University. She'd flown her Cessna 172 to school instead.

The campus newspaper OU Daily reports that Ariel Pollard comes from a flying family. Her dad Tim took her for her first airplane when she was six weeks old. She developed an interest in flying lessons at 13, began them at 15, and got her private certificate at 17. Oh, and Tim bought her the 172 when she was 15 as well.

Tim Pollard said he met his wife at the airport and took her flying for their first date. Ariel's twin sister Ali is also a pilot, according to the report. Her mom is also a licensed pilot but not current. Tim Pollard got his pilot certificate at the age of 22.

Tim Pollard said that he was "one proud daddy" when his daughter called to say she'd landed safely in Norman, OK, where OU is located.

Pollard said she'll keep flying as a hobby, but doesn't plan on making it a career.

There is, however, an aviation program at the university ... so one never knows.
