Richard Abruzzo Laid To Rest In New Mexico

Famed Balloonist Lost During Gordon Bennett Race

Balloonist Richard Abruzzo, who was lost when the balloon he and Carol Rymer Davis were piloting in the Gordon Bennett trans-Atlantic balloon race this fall went down in the ocean, was buried Wednesday in Albuquerque, NM, according to multiple media sources including the Associated Press. Among those attending was New Mexico's Governor, Gary Johnson.

The bodies of Abruzzo, 47, and Rymer Davis were found by a fishing boat December 6th off the coast of Italy. They were still in the gondola, which became entangled in the boat's fishing nets. The balloon went down during a storm while flying over the Adriatic Sea.

Abruzzo was married and had two children. His father Ben, who had been part of the first team to cross the Pacific Ocean in a balloon, was lost in a GA accident in 1985.
