OSH2013, Day One, Revisited: ICON, Pelton, Cessna, SubSonex, BendixKing

Also: Jam-Packed Opening Day Promises That "This Isn't Over" in EAA v FAA Fight

ICON Aircraft has been granted a waiver by the FAA to allow a maximum gross takeoff weight to sixteen-hundred-eighty pounds, which the company says will allow it to proceed with producing the airplane.

The company plans to have the first production airplane flying in 2014, but ICON has made predictions about production dates in the past that have not been met. In addition, Hawkins said that the airplane’s performance will be negatively affected by the increase in weight. The price has gone up as well, with a new ICON A-5 now expected to cost about 189-thousand dollars. EAA Chairman Jack Pelton opened his discussion of AirVenture 2013 with even more detail about the way that the FAA ran roughshod over the EAA barely two months ago... and also admitted that last year’s AirVenture showed that EAA had ‘lost its way...’ Still; EAA has made tremendous progress in the last year in the restoration of faith between this transitional organization and those who have supported it so long and so well. Cessna offered updates on several of their piston-engine programs. VP Jodi Noah said the Turbo Skylane JT-A was progressing towards an expected third-quarter certification by the FAA and also said that orders were coming in for both the Grand Caravan EX and the recently-certified TT-X. All this... and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
