Pratt & Whitney PurePower Engine Program Continues To Expand

More Than 3,500 Orders On The Books For The Geared Turbofan Engines

Pratt & Whitney has announced more than 3,500 orders that include announced and unannounced firm orders, plus options for its PurePower engine family with "game-changing" Geared Turbofan technology.

"This has been a tremendous year for the PurePower engine program, both in program accomplishments and customer acknowledgements," said Bob Saia, vice president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Development Programs, in a news release from the Paris Air Show. "The PurePower engine order book includes commitments from more than 35 customers around the world, and the program continues to achieve major milestones - including the first flight of the PW1100G-JM engine (pictured) powering the Airbus A320neo last month."

By the time the PW1100G-JM engine completed ground testing last month, more than 120 hours had been logged. The initial four engines have accumulated more than 400 hours of testing to date. Certification for the PW1100G-JM engine is planned for the third quarter of 2014 with entry into service planned for the fourth quarter of 2015.

The PW1500G engine for the Bombardier CSeries achieved Transport Canada Type certification in February. Pratt & Whitney is currently building PW1500G production engines at its facility in Mirabel, Canada, and has delivered six propulsion systems to Bombardier for its initial three CS100 flight test airplanes. The CSeries first flight is expected this month, with entry into service planned for 2014.

Embraer in January announced it would become the fifth aircraft manufacturer to select the PurePower engine when it chose the PW1700G and PW1900G engines as the exclusive power for its new second generation of the E-Jet aircraft family. Pratt & Whitney anticipates the PW1900G and 1700G engines will be certified in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Embraer expects program launch later this year and entry into service is planned for 2018.

The PW1200G engine (pictured) for the Mitsubishi Regional Jet is on track to begin the certification program in the third quarter of this year, with entry into service planned for 2015. The PW1400G engine for the Irkut's MC-21 airplane family continues to progress on schedule, with entry into service planned for 2017.

The PurePower engine program has completed more than 4,800 hours of ground and flight testing and 13,700 cycles of full engine testing.
