While at EAA AirVenture 2014, ANN News Editor Tom Patton began a quest to learn more about the heart and soul of your aircraft battery.
He sat down with Chris Holder of Concorde Batteries to dig into the details. This video is number 1 of 3 videos that Tom put together to share what he found out about this all-important piece of aircraft equipment. In this video we talk about the myths and facts of your aircraft battery.
The first issue addressed is one of servicing lead-acid and nickel-cadmium (NiCad) Batteries in the same area. Holder explains that what “once was, now isn’t,” and he tells you why. It’s common to consider the battery as simply being part of the aircraft starting system, but Holder says that’s not the case. He then addresses other important jobs the battery does after the engine is running. During this discussion, Holder addresses the differences between FAA type-certificated aircraft, experimental aircraft, and the light sport planes.
Other issues addressed are battery voltage, how the battery starting ability may not be a good indication of battery condition, and questions of storage on a concrete floor. Watch the video and you may be surprised by what is myth and what is fact.
