FAA Looks At D.C. Airspace Violation

Cessna 172 Pilot Came Within 30 Miles Of Nation's Capital

The FAA is investigating the flight of a Cessna 172 which had departed from New York, and which crossed the prohibited airspace boundary over Washington, D.C. "several times" Tuesday around 1800.

The Associated Press reports that the FAA alerted NORAD about the wayward airplane, which sent two Coast Guard helicopters to intercept it. The still-unidentified pilot was escorted to Fredrick Municipal Airport (KFDK) in Maryland.

Pilots are responsible for knowing about and avoiding flight into restricted airspace. FAA spokesman Jim Peters said penalties can run from a warning letter to the revocation of a pilot's airman certificate, as well as fines.
