Airborne 11.29.17: Cessna SkyCourier, Women's Freefall Record, KSMO Temp Closure

Also: Hartzell Engine Technologies, Persian Gulf Airlines, 'Unsafe' Intercept Of P-8, Farnborough 2018

Textron Aviation has introduced a new twin-engine, high-wing, large-utility turboprop – the Cessna SkyCourier 408.

FedEx Express has signed on as the launch customer for up to 100 aircraft, with an initial fleet order of 50 cargo aircraft and options for 50 more. Entry into service for the SkyCourier is planned for 2020. A group of 32 women set a world record for skydiving in formation on November 25th during an event held at Skydive Arizona over the Thanksgiving weekend. The women exited two airplanes in formation at 18,000 feet. It was the fourth jump of the day, and the 14th attempt of the event. The formation was what is known by skydivers as an upright formation in which everyone freefalls in a position that looks like sitting in a chair --"sit-flying" in skydiving lingo. This is the first all-female world record event of its kind. After years of lies, hyperbole and some atrocious conduct on their part, the city of Santa Monica, CA is proceeding with Phase 2 of the runway shortening project at Santa Monica Municipal Airport (KSMO), completely closing the airfield for 10 days beginning at 2100, Tuesday, Dec. 12. The airport will be closed to all traffic until 0700 (PST) on Saturday, Dec. 23, when it will reopen with its sole runway reduced from 4,973 feet in length to 3,500 feet. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
