Elon Musk May Be Close To An 'Electric Jet'

Says He Has Been Mulling The Idea For Years

Well, we can scratch this one off our April 1 story idea list. It seems Elon Musk has some plans in the works to develop a VTOL electric jet.

Musk, who is the founder of Tesla (among other companies like SpaceX) said at the awards ceremony for the Hyperloop Pod competition that he has been thinking about the idea "a bit more. I think I have something that might close. I'm quite tempted to do something about it," he said during an unexpected question-and-answer session at the event.

Engadget reports that Musk's comments are the first time he has acknowledged that he might follow through on the idea.

Tesla makes high-performance electric cars, so the powerplant for a propeller-driven aircraft might not be that much of a stretch. But the concept of an electric jet might present some unique engineering challenges.

But Musk has said in the past the the best way to approach such a project is to "limit the number of miracles in series. You want to start off with something that's the most doable, and then expand from there."

Stay tuned ...
