Georgia's Douglas Airport Reports Avionics Theft

Suspect Makes Off with Valuable Electronics in Quiet Nighttime Grab

Every apron-parker's worst fear has come true for those operating out of the Douglas Municipal Gene Chambers Airport after an unidentified suspect pilfered "thousands of dollars' worth" of electronics.

The anemic security offered by many vintage general aviation aircraft, and the costly state of replacement avionics is a stressful combination, one thankfully rare at most airports. Those interested in trading avionics for drugs are few and far between, at least. But the Douglas Police Department says they're somewhat stumped as to who exactly carried out the January 15th heist. The only details lie in a white Ford Explorer (or similar SUV) and the fact that the suspect is believed to have been familiar with the operation and tech involved in aviation.

While Georgian pilots may be on edge, the story is a reminder to some of the more complacent aviators among us - security is an arms race, and most run-of-the-mill "lockboxes" and containers have long been defeated by even the laziest criminals. Leaving the plane's keys in a flimsy tin to be pried open with a screwdriver may not be the best way to insure the club's fancy new touchscreen avionics.

The Douglas Police Department is eager for leads and tips, on the off chance anyone has them at the link below.
