At the AOPA Expo 2008, it was obvious that 2009 was to be (in
part) the year of EVS. A number of OEM and aftermarket deployments
were shown and discussed and ANN's Aero-TV crews used the event as
an opportunity to find out more about the Forward Vision
offering... recently TSO'ed for retrofit installation in the Cirrus
SR 20 and SR 22.
Patrick Farrell, CEO of Forward Vision, joined with One Sky
Aviation president at AOPA to announce the STC (#SA02329AK) award
for installation of the EVS-100 infrared sensor on the Cirrus SR20
and SR22 aircraft.
"With this STC, we will cooperatively be able to provide an
affordable (and STC certified) EVS system to the general aviation
community that will bring an enhanced level of situational
awareness and ultimately flight safety to the cockpit of Cirrus
aftermarket aircraft," Farrell stated.
The companies had hoped to announce the STC much sooner, but
weather delays preempted flight testing. Those tests were recently
completed by the Anchorage ACO.
The Forward Vision EVS-100, powered by Max-Viz, is a low cost,
non-cryogenically cooled Enhanced Vision System (EVS) for the OEM
and retrofit markets. The sensor offers Long-Wave Infrared ( LWIR)
sensing, is sunlight safe and has excellent resolution in a grey
scale presentation format. The lightweight self-contained and ready
to mount system is effectively operated both day and night and is
designed to be upgradeable.
The Cirrus STC program is the first in a series of general
aviation airframes that is under development for FAA approval. The
EVS-100 is billed as a low cost, non-cryogenically cooled Enhanced
Vision System for the OEM and aftermarket. The company says it
offers the latest generation Long Wave Infra Red (LWIR) sensor that
is sunlight safe, and has excellent grey scale to discern
detail.
The price of the entire retrofit kit is $17,500 MSRP, including
the sensor.
