FAA, Apple Investigate iPhone 6 Fire On Airliner

Passenger's Phone Caught Fire Aboard An Alaska Airlines Flight

An iPhone 6 belonging to a passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight from Bellingham, WA to Honolulu, HI caught fire during the flight, prompting an investigation by the FAA and Apple.

ABC News reports that the phone belonged to Anna Crail, a college sophomore. She was watching a movie on her phone when flames suddenly began to shoot out of the device.

A spokesperson for Alaska Air said the incident occurred last Thursday aboard flight 807. It was about 90 miles from touchdown in Honolulu.

Crail told television station KOMO-TV that flames about eight inches long suddenly began to shoot out of the phone "I flipped it off onto the ground and it got under someone's seat, and the flames were just getting higher and a bunch of people stood up," she said.

The airline spokesperson said that "the fire was quickly extinguished by our flight attendants, who are trained for situations like this."

No one was injured in the incident, and the flight landed safely in Hawaii.

A cause of the fire has not been determined, according to the airline. The FAA is investigating, as is Apple, which told ABC news that it has reached out to both the woman's family and the airline.
