Drone Pilot Ticketed For Operating In Wilderness Area

First Ticket Issued In The Adirondack Park Forest Preserve

A person who allegedly flew a drone over the High Peaks Wilderness in the Adirondack Wilderness Area in June is due in court next month after being issued the first ticket for flying a drone in the area on June 17.

The Adirondack Almanack reports that the man allegedly flew and landed a drone near the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Johns Brook Outpost. He was observed by a forest ranger and issued the ticket. The charge was operating motorized equipment within land classified as a wilderness.

If found guilty, the man faces a fine of up to $250 with $75 in court costs. The DEC would offer no other information about the incident, according to the report.

The DEC's rules do not specifically address drone use, but the agency did tell the paper that drone operation is not allowed in primitive, canoe and wilderness areas.
