Roscosmos Signs Deal With Space Adventures For Trip To ISS

Flight To Take Place In 2021

Russia's state space corporation Roscosmos and Space Adventures have signed a contract for a "short duration" space flight carrying two "spaceflight participants" ... read "tourists" on board a Soyuz spacecraft to the Russian segment of the International Space Station. The flight is scheduled to launch in late 2021.

The two entities have been cooperating in space tourism since 2001, when the first space tourist - Dennis Tito - flew on orbit. In total, seven people have visited space station under the auspices of the space tourism program, with Charles Simonyi visiting the ISS twice.

The two paying passengers have not been named. Engadget reports that Roscosmos is open about its motivation. The passengers will help fund the country's spaceflight industry, including the manufacture of new Soyuz spacecraft. The publicity has reportedly become a secondary consideration to the monetary support.
