Another Helo Down In Iraq

Brought Down By Gunfire

Insurgent ground fire near Baghdad brought down an Army AH-64 Apache Sunday, killing both crew members on board.

An Army quick-reaction force was immediately deployed to the crash site, according to Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmit, who was speaking at a briefing in the Iraqi capital. The troops blocked traffic on the capital's west side, near the suburb of Abu Ghraib. Several military helicopters provided airborne security by circling overhead.

The shoot-down apparently sparked a major battle between coalition forces and Iraqi gunmen in Abu Ghraib. Insurgents in the area killed an American soldier and kidnapped a US citizen who was acting as a security guard.

Military officials say the gunmen, heavily armed and wearing masks to hide their faces, have been roaming the streets of the city, targeting American and coalition convoys in the area for the past four days.
