Boy Scouts Rescue Pilot Who Landed In The Congaree River

Scouts On A Canoe Trip Pulled Pilot From The River As He Was Swimming Away From His Plane

Scouts often see interesting things on a canoe trip, but members of troop 597 based in Dacula, GA did not expect to find a submerged airplane on their annual Christmas Paddle.

But that's exactly what they found while canoeing on the Congaree River near Columbia, SC last Saturday. A plane passed low over the canoes, and a short time later, they came across the Mooney M20 submerged in the water, and saw the pilot swimming away from the airplane.

Television station WTVC reports that the scouts helped the pilot, who was not named, get to the bank, built a fire to warm him up, and transported the pilot to the other side of the river when the Emergency Medical Services arrived ... on the other shore.

The pilot was taken to a hospital, where he was checked out and released.
