The FAA published a response to a recent article reviewing the apparently lackluster safety performance in an industry apparently - to the untrained eye, at least - beset by near-collisions and spookily close calls. The page, entitled "Close Calls and the New York Times: What You Need to Know", the FAA maintains that the U.S. aviation system is the safest in the world. They do admit that some problems exist, while pointing out the myriad safety efforts and overall impressive record established in terms of reducing fatalities throughout the airline ecosystem at home.
Irish Department of Transport Hands Off Mission for 10 Years
Bristow Ireland Limited, a subsidiary of the greater Bristow Group, will soon handle the provision of rotary and fixed-wing search & rescue services for the Irish Coast Guard. The firm will begin taking on their contract in the 4th quarter of 2024, stationing 6 SAR-configured Leonardo AW189 helicopters from 4 bases located in Sligo, Shannon, Dublin Weston, and Waterford, Ireland. In accordance with the contract to sport the ‘latest evolution of mission systems’ per the Irish Coast Guard, the AW189s will sport day/night/IFR avionics exceeding FAA and EASA Part 29 requirements.

On August 13, 2023, at 1128 eastern daylight time, a Scoda Aeronautica Ltda Super Petrel LS, N239WD, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Hickory, North Carolina. The private pilot and the student pilot-rated passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to preliminary Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data, the flight originated from Hickory Regional Airport (HKY) Hickory, North Carolina about 1120 and flew to the northeast at an altitude of 1,600 ft mean sea level (msl) and a groundspeed of about 98 knots.

Frank Bustgens, Marketing Director for Opale Paramodels, was demonstrating the miniature powered paragliders at AMA Expo West in Ontario, CA late last year. He told Aero-News CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell that the company has been making the aircraft since 2009, and was introducing them now into the U.S. Market.

ALPA is committed to ensuring that small communities continue to receive robust air service through strong Essential Air Service reform, but that service should never come at the expense of safety. Closing the public charter loophole would be a step forward for safety that will guarantee one level of safety, so passengers flying into small communities can depend on the same safety and security as passengers flying in Atlanta or New York.”
