Airborne 09.06.19: Last Red Bull, EAA Comments, SnF/ACE Aids Bahamas

Also: ESA v SpaceX, Classic Aircraft, SpaceX Dragon Capsule, De Havilland Canada

The Red Bull Air Race series is drawing to a close, with the final race set for this weekend in Chiba, Japan.

And while the focus is usually on the pilots and speed, the voice that communicates from ground to sky is what every air racing pilot relies on. For the Master Class pilots in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, Jim DiMatteo is that voice. A decorated former TOPGUN Commander, he has been the Race Director since 2007. “Jimmy is exactly the person I trust, capable to help in any situation,” comments reigning World Champion Martin Šonka. Safety for manned aircraft, not commercial expediency, must be the priority for federal air regulators as they consider an exemption application by Amazon regarding package deliveries by UAS, noted EAA in formal comments to the FAA. EAA made the comments in response to Amazon’s petition to the FAA that requested relief from certain rules in order to conduct deliveries by UAS, commonly known as drones. The exemption would allow Amazon additional freedom to operate below 400 feet above ground level (AGL) without the line-of-sight observation requirements for UAS operations. Sun 'n Fun and the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) have organized a relief effort to send supplies to those affected by the devastation of Hurricane Dorian in the Islands of The Bahamas. A receiving station is being established on the Sun 'n Fun Expo Campus to process and distribute the supplies in partnership with Lakeland Linder International Airport. “Our facilities were used for staging relief efforts during Hurricane Irma in 2017, and we are using what we learned from that event to quickly organize and prepare to assist our friends in The Bahamas,” said John Leenhouts, president and CEO of Sun 'n Fun/ACE. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
