Colorado State Rep Seeks To Honor Fallen Blue Angel Pilot

Resolution Would Rename Highway For Capt. Jeff Kuss

A former high school teacher in Durango, CO who now is a member of the state legislature has introduced a bill to rename Colorado Highway 3 the Capt. Jeff Kuss Memorial Highway.

Barbara McLachlan, a who is serving her first term in the state legislature, introduced the bill in the House Transportation and Energy Committee last week, where it passed unanimously.

Capt. Kuss was fatally injured when the F/A-18 Hornet he was flying as part of the Blue Angels demonstration team went down during a practice flight in Tennessee last year.

But 20 years ago, Kuss had been a student in a class taught by McLachlan, according to a report from The Durango Herald. She told the committee that she had connected with Kuss not because of some specific assignment or paper he had written, but because of the attitude and enthusiasm he brought to the classroom.

The bill has a long way to go before "Capt. Jeff Kuss Memorial Highway" signs would be erected on Highway 3, but should it make it all the way through the legislative process, an anonymous donor has offered to pay the $300 for the signs that would be placed at either end of Highway 3.
