Airborne 12.21.18: SparrowHawk III Returns, Robinson-Avidyne, Aspen STC

Also: 787th 787 Dreamliner, Detroit Flying Cars Accident, No Drone Hunts, Aero-TV: Innovation By Avilution

American Autogyro International, Inc. (AAI) has announced the restart of production of the SparrowHawk III Quickbuild kit.

In addition, AAI will be offering enhanced support for the more than 100 SparrowHawk kits sold thus far. When the original SparrowHawk Gyroplane was first introduced, AAI notes that the homebuilt gyroplane kit industry had a poor reputation due to accidents. The majority of these could be attributed to flawed designs that used misplaced thrust vectors. The SparrowHawk corrected this issue by introducing the innovative "center-line-thrust" placement of the propeller and appropriately aligning the rotor thrust vector. Robinson Helicopters has been active as 2018 comes to a close... this time with the addition of the Avidyne IFD 400 series to their line of civil helicopters. Robinson has added Avidyne’s IFD 400 series touchscreen GPS navigators to its R22, R44 and R66 avionics options. The 400 series may be operated by either touchscreen or buttons and knobs which allows the IFD to be installed in the helicopter’s lower center console or in the pilot side console. Wi-Fi, for interfacing with an iPad, and Synthetic Vision are standard. The FAA has awarded an STC to Aspen Avionics for the Evolution E5 Dual Electronic Flight Instrument (EFI). Introduced in April 2018 at the AEA annual convention, the STC’d, non-TSO Evolution E5 consolidates attitude indicator plus DG/CDI into a single display with a rechargeable backup battery. It also includes GPSS, air data computer, and ADAHRS starting at $4,995. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
