Law Passed: FAA To Regulate Space Tourism

Senate passes legislation to enable FAA's oversight of the emerging industry

If you're one of the thousands of people that have plunked down sizeable deposits to take that flight into space, your departure date just got a bit closer.

Wednesday evening, during the last minutes of the 108th Congress, the Senate approved a law that gives the Federal Aviation Administration the power to regulate the emerging space tourism industry. The new law gives the FAA oversight over the flights as well as permission to issue permits.

Ever since Scaled Composite's SpaceshipOne won the X-Prize competition and its $10 million prize, and Sir Richard Branson announced Virgin Galactic, a space tourism venture using Scaled's technology, many people have expressed interest and/or made deposits to fly on Branson's spacecraft.

The law now goes to President Bush's desk, where he is expected to sign it.
