Napping Chinese Controllers Cause Go-Around

China Eastern Flight Aborted Landing July 8

An investigation by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has determined that a China Eastern flight was forced to abandon a landing attempt and go around because air traffic controllers were sleeping on the job.

FMT News reports that the flight had started its descent into Huhan airport and attempted to contact controllers three times, twice in English and once in Chinese. There was no response to the airliner crew.

The aircraft was forced to abort its landing attempt and circle the airport for about 10 minutes before landing sometime between 2 and 3 am local time according to the report.

No additional comments were available from either the CAAC or China Eastern.
