U.K. Helicopter Pilot Has License Pulled For Airspace Violation

Flew Above A Red Arrows Display During An Airshow

A helicopter pilot who flew his Gazelle helo into restricted airspace and over the top of a display by the Red Arrows team on May 8 has had his pilot license revoked.

The pilot was 62-year-old Andrew Kane. The U.K. newspaper The Daily Mail reports that Kane violated the restricted airspace for the air show at Old Warden in Bedfordshire on May 8 during a performance by the jet team. The RAF pilots managed to avoid any collision, but had to abandon part of their routine, according to the paper.

The violation of the restricted airspace came about two minutes from the end of the team's 20 minute performance ... and they executed a delayed finale after the airspace was cleared.

Kane, of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, was charged with inadequately preparing for a flight and flying in restricted airspace. He pleaded guilty to both charges and fined the equivalent of about $3,254, and ordered to pay £500 ... about $651, to the CAA.
