Was Believed To Be The Last Of The WASPs Alive In Michigan

Another of the members of the WASPs has Gone West. Michigan resident Mildred Jane Doyle passed away Friday at the age of 97.

Television station WOOD reports that Doyle's daughter informed them of her passing. Doyle was one of the more than 1,000 women to serve their country flying airplanes in the United States during WWII. While they never flew in combat. Doyle told the station in a 2017 interview that it was still a very dangerous job.

Doyle attended Grand Rapids Junior College in 1940, and according to GRCC President Bill Pink, she told him it was an experience that changed her life.

“Jane was a military aviation pioneer, putting her life on the line to serve her country. Hers is a story of determination, bravery and sacrifice. We share our heartfelt condolences with her family, and she will continue to inspire GRCC students for years to come,” Pink said in a news release.
