PW1100G, MTU Aero Engines To Share In Major Contract From India

IndiGo Equips 150 A320neo Jets With The Geared Turbofan

In one of the largest orders placed in recent aviation history, Indian airline IndiGo has selected Pratt & Whitney's PurePower PW1100G to equip 150 A320neo aircraft it has on firm order. The deal is for 300 of the new engines, plus options on additional powerplants. MTU Aero Engines expects the deal to be worth about $425 million. The company has about a 15 percent stake in the geared turbofan (GTF) engine.

"That's a stunning success for the geared turbofan, and of course for us too," said MTU CEO Egon Behle. "MTU is proud to have a substantial workshare in this tremendously successful engine program."

The German engine manufacturer is responsible for the unique, high-speed low-pressure turbine, one of the key components of the GTF and, jointly with its U.S. partner, is building a new high-pressure compressor. IndiGo's decision brings the total number of orders received for PW1000G engines, including options, to more than 1,200. In addition to the A320 neo, the engine powers Bombardier's CSeries, Mitsubishi's MRJ, and Irkut's MS-21.
