British Say 2003 Friendly Fire Death Was A Criminal Act

US Denies Culpability

A British coroner has ruled that the death of a British soldier under friendly fire from US pilots was a criminal act. The US State Department is having no part of it.

25-year-old Lance Corporal Matty Hull was killed near Basra on March 28, 2003 when a US pilot fired on his tank convoy. The US called it a "tragedy" during a time of war.

Oxford assistant deputy coroner Andrew Walker said Hull's death was "entirely avoidable. It was unlawful because there was no lawful reason for it and in that respect it was criminal."

He added the US pilots from the Idaho Air National Guard should have flown lower, to confirm identities before opening fire.

Hull's widow, Susan Hull, says she's now prepared to "draw the line" on the event.

"I think all of our family feel it was the right verdict," she told the BBC. "It was what we'd waited four years to hear."

She called a lack of cooperation from the US "very disappointing", but says she will not pursue any penalties against the pilots.
