Airborne 05.22.19: RedBull Surprise, NASA Lunar Lander, TBM 940

Also: Pilatus PC-24, GAMA 1Q/19 Sales Report, Sikorsky HH-60W, Honda Expands

Aerobatic pilot and former US Serviceman Aaron Fitzgerald chose the open space of the Hudson River in New York to stun onlookers with a wide range of precision helicopter maneuvers. According to Red Bull, Fitzgerald performed the loops, barrel rolls and dives in front of the Statue of Liberty, Battery Park and alongside the West Side Highway. The pilot chose the unique practice course in preparation for the Memorial Day Weekend’s Bethpage Air Show. The Red Bull helicopter is able to perform the maneuvers through the use of a unique rigid titanium rotor. It allows Fitzgerald to reverse the airflow through the rotor without damage, ensuring he can safely execute the maneuvers. NASA has selected 11 companies to conduct studies and produce prototypes of human landers for its Artemis lunar exploration program. This effor

Aero-TV: The Bally Bomber - The All Time Ultimate Warbird Replica?

Aero-News Talks With The Airplane's Builder

One of the many unique airplanes at AirVenture 2018 was a 1/3-scale B-17 bomber built by Jack Bally, who talked about the 17-year project with Aero-News at the show last summer. Bally said that the idea was born over "too much beer one night with a bunch of buddies" as they talked about what kind of airplane they could build that would be the only one of its kind.

Airborne 05.20.19: Icon Layoffs, Perlan Mission II, Lilium Air Taxi

Also: #HonorTheWASP, NASA Funds Research, Boom Supersonic And Dassault, New FlightSafety CEO

Amid recent reports of yet another sinking of an Icon A5 airframe, a heretofore unsuccessful attempt to raise more capital, and GAMA stats showing that Icon’s promised production targets are not being met, along comes news of company layoffs. An Icon A5 was sunk in Washington state last week after witnesses reported it to have suffered a hard landing... not the first such report. The airframe sunk to wing level and required winching out of the water, for repair. Reported attempts to raise additional capital appear to be unproductive and promises of completing as many as 12-20 airframes per month have definitely not been reached as GAMA noted that their First Quarter production total tallied only 14 aircraft... less than 5 birds per month. Airbus Perlan Mission II has launched its fourth season of ope

Airborne-Unmanned 05.21.19: Rec Drone Changes, Lilium Electric, Int'l Drone Conf

Also: Langley Aerodrome, $9.3 Million For ResponDrone, DJI Drones Comply, Restrictions Near Navy Vessels

The FAA is implementing changes for recreational drone flyers. While recreational flyers may continue to fly below 400 feet in uncontrolled airspace without specific certification or operating authority from the FAA, they are now required to obtain prior authorization from the FAA before flying in controlled airspace around airports. The new requirement to obtain an airspace authorization prior to flying a drone in controlled airspace replaces the old requirement to notify the airport operator and the airport air traffic control tower prior to flying within five miles of an airport. Lilium has taken the wraps off its new five-seater air taxi prototype. The Lilium Jet completed its maiden unmanned flight in Germany earlier this month. The full-scale, full-weight prototype is powered by 36 all-el

Airborne 05.17.19: Virgin Galactic, Rotax 914, FlightDesign F2

Also: Robinson Delivers 2 More Cadets, Bristow Group Bankruptcy, Gogo AVANCE L3, IFD Software Upgrade

At a press conference late last week in Santa Fe, Virgin Founder Sir Richard Branson announced that Virgin Galactic’s development and testing program had advanced sufficiently to move the spaceline staff and space vehicles from Mojave, California to their commercial operations headquarters at Spaceport America, New Mexico. The move, which involves more than 100 staff, will commence immediately and continue through the summer, to minimize schooling disruption for families. Rotax has issued a NEW Service Instruction for 914 (series) engines. Effective immediately, the ignition check ("Mag Drop") limits found on Page 3-9 of the current 914 Operators Manual have increased from 300/115 to 500/150. This update will be incorporated into the next revision of the 914 Operators Manual. If your aircraf

AMA Drone Report 05.16.19: FAA Memorandum, Spark 2?, Illegal Anti-Drone Ops?

Also: FAA UAS Symposium, Alpha Electro, Osmo Action Camera, Hummingbird Robot

The net has been awash with copies of a memorandum that may foretell the future of the UAS community. This memorandum was intended as FAA guidance to educate air traffic control facilities (ATC) on best methods to respond to recreational flyers seeking authorization, not as guidance to recreational operators. Recent legislation under Section 349 (c) states operators in controlled airspace will be required to seek authorization from towered airports, unless flying from a charted flying site. AMA successfully championed that if you are flying at an AMA flying field or sanctioned event, you can continue flying by following AMA’s safety program and within the existing agreements your club or contest director has with nearby airports. DJI introduced the Spark drone back in 2017, and a follow-on aircraft may be among the
