Greece announces no-fly zone over Olympic Games sites

A whopping forty-five mile no-fly zone has been established by Greek officials over Athens. The establishment of the zone is part of the security measures for the 2004 Olympics to be held in that city in August, as well as the Paralympics in September. Its purpose will be to prevent suspicious aircraft from entering the air space above the Olympic sites.

The zone's area of coverage ranges from Athens International Airport in Spata and the Olympic Stadium in Oaka. Enforcement of the zone will be the responsibility of a number of aircraft and defense systems, including the PAC-3 missiles.

The Summer Olympics in Athens begin on August 13. The Greek CAA expects that that highest levels of air traffic will take place between August 9 and 13.
