Two Arrested In Connection With The Incident
Two people have been arrested in connection with an incident which occurred Saturday at the Michigan University home football opener after they allegedly flew a drone over the stadium.
The Detroit News reports that according to Melissa Overton, the University of Michigan deputy chief of police, the two were contacted after the drone was spotted initially by a fan attending the game, and they were subsequently arrested. "There’s a lot to it,” Overton said. “We’re going to continue following up on all our leads and do everything we can do. It’s difficult to control air space."
The University of Michigan has a policy that states that “unsafe or unauthorized” drone flights by anyone on the campus carries "criminal and/or civil penalties." Anyone convicted of such use can lose flying privileges for up to a year for a first offence, and permanently lose those privileges if the offence is repeated.
In a statement released prior to the football season, the Michigan Department of Public Safety and Security said “people at or near Michigan Stadium may see a drone flying overhead. No drone activity will occur on the day of a home football game.” The release said that drones would potentially fly predetermined routes but would not be flown over occupied residential buildings.
Overton said she could not release more details because the investigation is ongoing, but that the safety of everyone on campus is "a big thing."
