Ultralight Ground School Program Announced

An Ultralight Pilot Ground School is scheduled for Frederick Community College's Adult Education program. The primary goal is to prepare students for an FAA recognized ultralight pilot written examination. The curriculum includes references and current updates on the proposed Sport Pilot and Glider Trike pilot certification programs. NOTAMs, FAA Flight Service Briefings, Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) and other security issues are included.

The program is open to all, but may particularly be of interest to newcomers to ultralight aircraft flight, ultralight pilots who have not yet passed the written tests for registration, those who want a head-start preview of the upcoming Sport Pilot written examinations, airplane pilots in transition to ultralight-type aircraft, existing pilots who want a comprehensive refresher, or anyone with a desire to learn more about the requirements to fly ultralight aircraft.

There are no restrictions to undertaking this course: No minimum age, No FAA ratings or prior aviation classes are required, as well as no medical requirements.

The 8-week course begins Tuesday, April 13th, 2004, from 6:00pm until 9:00pm, and will continue each Tuesday evening on the Frederick Community College campus. This is a non-credit course. During the last session the ultralight pilot written test will be administered for those who so request.

Tuition is $185.00. Books are not included and will need to be purchased by the student prior to the start of class for approximately $88.00 depending on your specific area of interest (Airplane, Trike, or Canopy configuration).

The primary instructor is ANN's own John Ballantyne, a well-known pioneer of ultralight aviation and author of ultralight training programs. DO register early, Frederick Community College requires a minimum number of sign-ups to commit.

Book List (required): Ultralight Pilot’s Flight Training Manual: $29.95 from US Ultralight Association (USUA) or Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA); Federal Ultralight Resource Guide: $14.95 from USUA or separate circulars may be obtained directly from FAA (AC 103-6; AC 103-7; AC 90-66A); Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge: $18.95 from pilot shops, aviation book suppliers or FAA; FAR/AIM 2003: $15.95 from pilot shops, aviation book suppliers or FAA; Washington Sectional Aeronautical Chart: $8.00 from pilot shops, aviation book suppliers or FAA.
