Delta Changes Policy On Transfer Of Miles

No Longer Transferable To An Heir

If you're a Delta frequent flyer and you were planning to leave miles to someone in your will ... Delta has changed its policy to make that no longer an option.

The carrier used to allow miles to be reinstated and transferred to a relative following the death of someone who had been enrolled in the program. But television station WPTV reports that Delta's new policy voids the miles on the death of the person who accumulated them.

Delta spokeswoman Chris Kelly said that Delta remains the only airline that allows frequent flyers to accumulate miles that do not expire. She told USA Today that to allow that policy to continue, "some other, lesser-used policies were examined and determined not to have as much value to our members."

Delta eliminated the expiration of its "SkyMiles" in 2011. Previously, miles expired 24 months after a member's last qualifying mileage activity, which required a member to earn or redeem miles within that period.

The rules do still allow SkyMiles members to transfer their miles to a relative that also has a SkyMiles account prior to death.
