Opposition Party Blasts Niger's Purchase Of Presidential Jet

Boeing 737 Acquired By The Impoverished Nation

The purchase of a Boeing 737-700 by the government of Niger has opposition leaders questioning the majority party's priorities.

Niger is one of the world's poorest nations, and the $40 million purchase has sparked strong rebukes from opposition leaders, according to the French news service AFP.

Ousseini Salatou, spokesman for the Nigerian opposition coalition, pointed out that the country is "facing a new famine" and "further serious flooding this year" but the government decided to make a "prestige purchase" in acquiring the jet.

The plane is intended to replace a 737 purchased in the 1970s by then-president Seyni Kountche. It has been described by one aviation analyst as a "flying coffin" that "no longer meets international standards."

The government took delivery of the airplane over the weekend. Defense Minister Karidjo Mahamadou said the purchase would help improve the "influence of our illustrious republic."
