Loon Balloons Flying Over Yellowstone

Rare Sighting And Tweet Of Google Aircraft

There has been a rare sighting of one of Google's Loon balloons over Yellowstone National Park.

Google's parent company Alphabet has a test site in Winnemucca, NV, where it has been testing its balloon-borne internet connectivity plans for more than two years. The goal of the project is to offer high-speed Internet connectivity through signals relayed by the high-altitude balloons, which are considerably less expensive than satellites, to areas where Internet service is spotty to nonexistent.

The balloons generally fly between FL550 and FL700, and have been seen as far away as Wichita, KS, according to a report from Recode.net online. Yellowstone is about 610 miles north of Winnemucca.

To track the Google Loon balloons, check out the link below and enter the identifier "HBAL".
