Air Force Seeks Nominations For SecAF Prestigious STEM PhD Program

Open To Services Most Highly Qualified Active Duty Captains

As part of a continuous effort to develop exceptional leaders in a highly technical environment, Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson is introducing the Secretary of the Air Force Prestigious Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Ph.D. Program for the service’s most highly qualified active duty captains.

“As the Air Force modernizes its weapon systems and equipment, the need for STEM professionals within the service continues to grow,” Wilson (pictured) said. “This program gives talented Airmen the opportunity to get the education needed to better serve our nation.”

Each year the Air Force will select three captains to obtain their doctorate degrees in STEM programs. Air Force’s Personnel Center Officer Workforce Development will accept program nomination packages now through Sept. 28, 2018. Waivers to qualification criteria or deadlines will not be accepted.

Applicants must have less than nine years total Air Force commissioning service date as of Aug. 31, 2019, and be granted release from their career field. An active duty service commitment of five years will be incurred upon program completion.

Participants will be selected based on military performance, strength of application, letters of nomination, past academic performance and personal statements.

Interested officers should submit their packages and career field release approval to their respective major or combatant commands, forward operating agencies, direct reporting units or the Air Force District of Washington through their chain of command.
