FAA Goes For The GAT-II

Environmental Tectonics Corporation Announces Sale

Environmental Tectonics Corporation announced the recent sale of a GAT-II(R) General Aviation Trainer to the FAA, Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), Oklahoma City, OK.

CAMI is the medical certification, research, and education wing of the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration's Office of Aerospace Medicine at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma City. Their overall mission is aviation safety. CAMI studies the factors that influence human performance in the aviation environment, finds ways to understand them, and then communicates that understanding to the aviation community.

According to Dr. Melchor J. Antunano, Director of CAMI, the FAA will use the GAT-II(R) to provide pilots with training in the hazards associated with spatial disorientation during flight.

Spatial Disorientation training emphasizes the various physiological hazards that pilots could experience during actual flight maneuvers. FAA statistics show that when spatial disorientation is involved in a mishap, nine out of ten of those mishaps are fatal.

The CAMI's GAT-II is equipped with fourteen of the most common General Aviation Spatial Disorientation Illusions. According to Glenn King, ETC's Aircrew Training Systems Applications Manager, "The FAA CAMI GAT-II is the most technologically advanced trainer available for Spatial Disorientation training. It is equipped with a specialized Profile Editor, which gives the CAMI operators the capability to develop other spatial disorientation illusions, in addition to specialized training flights."

The GAT-II(R) General Aviation Trainer is available in single engine, multi-engine, helicopter and regional jet versions.

Each GAT-II(R) supports VFR, IFR, spatial disorientation, and mishap prevention training. The motion platform provides roll, pitch, and yaw motions in response to pilot input. The visual display provides a photo- realistic terrain database and accurate modeling of major cities and terrain features. The list of impressive features also includes selectable meteorological conditions, instructor selectable malfunctions, various map views, and contains all FAA listed airports and navigational aids.
