FAA Grants Additional Credit For Elite PI-135 PCATD

The FAA has authorized use of the model PI-135 PCATD with the AP-3000 digital radio to satisfy regulatory requirements under 14 CFR Parts 61 and 141. Specifically, in addition to the 10 hours of instructional use already sanctioned on these systems, the PI-135 can now be used to perform the approaches, holding procedures, and intercepting/tracking required under section 61.57(c)(1) for recent instrument experience (instrument currency). The devices can also be used to log 2.5 hours toward the Private Pilot License as described under section 61.109(i)(1).

According to ELITE Simulation Solutions President and CEO John Dixon, “This is a significant step forward for the flight training industry. All pilots realize the importance of maintaining their skills but often find it difficult to do so in today’s busy world. Easier access to affordable hi-end simulation training will help encourage pilots to remain proficient and not shy away from invaluable recurrent training. The convenience that the PI-135 offers will make it one of the main tools to facilitate this ongoing process. In addition, the new instrument currency credit on the PI-135 will give pilots added incentive to seek the training they need to stay sharp. Needless to say this is an exciting time. These devices will not only be a part of today’s expanding instrument curriculum but also be an integral part in future training as technically advanced aircraft (TAA) become more prevalent.”

The FAA has recently removed the “PC” from PCATD changing the nomenclature slightly. PCATDs now come in two varieties and are referred to simply as either “Basic ATDs” or “Advanced ATDs.” ELITE was given the first “Advanced ATD” designation in October 2003 for its iGATE® simulation line which allows 20 hours toward instrument instruction, 50 hours to commercial and 25 hours to ATP requirements.
