Pilots In Taiwan Injured In Apache Accident

Aircraft Impacted A Building During Training Flight

Two Taiwanese military pilots were injured Friday when the Apache attack helicopter they were flying during a training exercise impacted a building. Taiwanese military officials said that the "incident happened during basic flight training for unknown reasons and a special team is investigating the cause."

The French news service AFP reports that the aircraft was one of six AH-64E Apache helicopters delivered to Taiwan in November under a fleet modernization program. Taiwan is the first non-U.S. military force to fly this latest variant of the Apache. The country ordered 30 of the aircraft, all of which are to be delivered by the end of this year.

Taiwan grounded the aircraft from December through February following a warning from Washington that the aircraft could malfunction. It is not known if Friday's accident was the result of a mechanical problem or pilot error.
