NMB Grants Single-Carrier Status To Atlas, Polar Pilots

Allows Workforce To Negotiate As Single Entity

The Teamsters announced this week the National Mediation Board (NMB) granted single-carrier status for Atlas Air and Polar Air. The two air carriers are the operating entities for Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, based in Purchase, NY. Atlas is the world's largest Boeing 747 cargo carrier.

"We requested single carrier status and, as we expected, our petition was granted," said Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa. "The NMB ruling means that Atlas and Polar crewmembers will become a strong, cohesive group that can deal with management through a single representative."

The Teamsters in June filed for a petition with the National Mediation Board seeking a vote to represent Atlas Air and Polar Air flight crewmembers.

"Single-carrier status will strengthen Atlas and Polar crewmembers in contract negotiations and administration," Hoffa said. "With this election, the Teamsters will continue to gain strength in the aviation industry. It's one further step in unity for transportation workers."

The organizing drive began with a grassroots effort by Atlas for Teamsters, led by Chairman Dave Allen and Vice-chairman Paul Kvernplassen, both Atlas crewmembers. More than 90 percent of Atlas crewmembers signed cards.

The Atlas unit includes about 750 crewmembers. Polar includes about 250 crewmembers. The NMB decision will trigger an election timetable, which is normally 90 days.
