Aero-TV: The New Murphy Radical - Updating A Classic SportPlane Program

Updating A Classic SportPlane Program…

Murphy Aircraft introduced a new airplane at Sun 'n Fun in April; The Murphy Radical.

Tyler Penner, General Manager & Sales for Murphy Aircraft Manufacturing, told ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell that the Murphy Radical is a Super STOL aircraft, and it is "an absolute rocket, it just wants to fly."

The Murphy Radical has an 1,100 pound empty weight, and a wingspan of 36 feet. It is powered by a Titan IOX-370 engine developing 209 horsepower.

Penner said that with a modified Beaver airfoil and all-metel construction, the Canadian-built Radical hits a niche market. "There's not a lot of other kit manufacturers that have an all-metal, side-by-side, high wing super-STOL aircraft."

The Radical is available as a kit, and the company offers an "assisted build" program. They can also deliver a ready-to-fly airplane.

The kit starts at $35,900, which includes a lot of standard equipment. The engine, of course, is an additional cost. The airplane that was on display at SNF was about $102,000, which did not account for labor, Penner said.
