Hackers Disrupt LOT Airline Flights

Some 1,400 Passengers Were Grounded Sunday After Ground Computer System Compromised

Poland's flag carrier LOT airlines operating out of Warsaw's Chopin Airport was the target of a cyber attack Sunday that resulted in the grounding of 10 LOT airlines flights affecting about 1,400 passengers.

Reuters reports that a ground-based computer system that issues flight plans was hacked Sunday afternoon, and required about five hours to bring back online.

LOT spokesman Adrian Kubicki said that at no time were any passengers in danger, and that flights inbound to Chopin Airport were able to land normally. No other airports were affected, he said.

But Kubicki also said that LOT uses "state-of-the-art computer systems, so this could potentially be a threat to others in the industry."

The origin of the attack has not been identified, and Polish officials are investigating.
