Surveys Show Loss Of Revenue Due To Delays In The Process
The U.K.-based Baltic Air Charter Association (BACA) has added its voice to the increasing number of industry leaders that are calling on the U.K. government to make a decision regarding a new runway in the South East. Many organizations have published data regarding the level of trade that the UK is losing as runway capacity becomes increasingly constrained at major airports such as Heathrow and Gatwick.
At the end of 2015 BACA commissioned a survey of its members by the respected analysts WingX. Based on the figures from that survey BACA estimates that a restriction of just 5% on the activities of its members will have an impact of some $235 million million per year in potential lost revenue. Another recent study published by the Center for Economics and Business Research estimates that the Government’s continued failure to get on with building a new runway in the South East is preventing £9.5 billion (approx. $12.4 billion) of international trade deals every year.
As the major political parties of the UK start their annual conferences, BACA asks that there is no further delay in the decision on runway capacity in the U.K. and that this is given top priority on the return to Parliament for the autumn session.
"It is now more than 15 months since Howard Davies delivered his report and the continued failure to make a decision is costing the UK economy a great deal of money," said BACA Chairman Richard Mumford. "Together with many companies from all industry sectors we strongly urge that a decision on runway capacity is made quickly. The lack of runway capacity in the UK is having a negative impact on the activities, not just of our members, but on many sectors of industry. BACA calls on the UK Government to make a decision on this issue to enable the economies of the UK and our international trading partners to flourish."
