FAA Would Stymie Another UAV Entrepreneur

DroneCast Had Hoped To Fly Advertising Banners Under Quadcopters

The FAA says that a 19-year-old Philadelphia entrepreneur can not fly advertising banners under a quadcopter about 25 feet off the ground.

That is the business model behind DroneCast, the brainchild of a former student at Drexel University. The teenager, who was not named, had formed a company to fly the advertising, according to a story appearing in Philly.com.

FAA spokesman Les Dorr on Tuesday told the website that DroneCast's business plan does not sound like it would meet the FAA’s requirements of a licensed pilot and a certified aircraft being flown for commercial purposes. He said he did not know if the agency has been officially notified of the entrepreneur's plans, or if there was any official effort underway to ground his quadcopters.
