Damage Found On Parachute Of Fatally Injured BASE Jumper

Woman Had Packed Her Own Chute Prior To Jump

A parachute packed and used by a Canadian woman who was fatally injured when it failed to open on a BASE jump May 12 at the Perrine Bridge in Idaho had been damaged, according to investigators.

The woman, 34-year-old Kristin Renee Czyz, was conducting her fifth jump of the day. Investigators said that they found a hole in the netting of the pilot chute and a broken zipper on the right side of the harness. Twin Falls County (ID) sheriff's spokeswoman Lori Stewart said that the damage "seemed to be consistent with a witness that stated that the bridle was caught on something."

While Czyz packed the parachute, it is not yet known to whom it actually belongs.

On the fatal jump, the pilot chute deployed but the main chute did not. First responders pulled Czyz's body from the river, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators closed the case saying the death was accidental.
