FAA Issues TFR For Papal Visit To Philadelphia

UAVs Specifically Prohibited By Flight Restrictions In Place September 26-27

The FAA will be issuing Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) in support of the Papal Visit by Pope Francis taking place in Philadelphia, PA September 26th through 27th, 2015.

The restrictions are designed to provide a safe and secure environment for the event but also ensure fair and equitable access to all airspace users to the greatest extent possible. As part of the airspace security measures for these events, the FAA will be issuing one or more Temporary Flight Restriction Notice to Airmen (NOTAM(s)) outlining the specific restrictions.

In the initial NOTAM, the FAA makes UAV operations the first item on its prohibited list. All flight waivers (including UAS Section 333 Exemption or COAs) to operate within the TFR will be temporarily suspended during the time of this NOTAM.

Also prohibited are: Aerobatic Maneuvers, Glider Operations, Parachute Operations, Ultralights, Lighter than Air/Balloon/Moored Balloon, Agricultural/Crop Dusting/Spraying, Animal Population Control, Banner Towing, Utility/Pipeline Patrols, Aircraft/Helicopters operating from a ship or private/corporate yacht, Model Rockets, or Maintenance Flights, Flight Training, and Practice Approaches are prohibited – including DOD, Law Enforcement and Air Ambulance.

All DOD, Federal, State or Local Law Enforcement, First Responders, Air Ambulance and News Media must contact the Aviation Security Operations Center (ASOC) for Airspace Access vetting and operational mission approval at least 7 days prior to this event. The ASOC contact information will be outlined in the official NOTAM in early September.

The restrictions discussed in this advisory may change with little or no notice. Pilots are advised to check NOTAMs frequently for possible changes prior to operations in the area. Pilots are strongly advised to contact a Flight Service Station at 1-800-WX- BRIEF (1-800-992-7433) prior to flight to check for all current NOTAMS.

The agency emphasizes that "Absolutely No Drones will be permitted within the Philadelphia Temporary Flight Restrictions September 26-27, 2015."
