CAE Announces New eVTOL Simulator

Because eVTOL Pilots Need Training Too…

CAE Inc. (formerly Canadian Aviation Electronics)—the manufacturer of simulation and modeling technologies and provider of aviation training services—has announced the launch of its CAE-700MXR Flight Simulator. The immersive, high-fidelity simulator targets the emergent electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) market and provides cost-effective, realistic, and scalable flight-training for the pilots of such contraptions.

The announcement, which was made at the Farnborough International Airshow, heralds the advent of revolutions in both regional air-taxi operations and the training regimens of the pilots under whose auspices such operations will be carried out.

The CAE-700MXR comprises a compact mini-motion platform and 360 degree field of view visuals that deliver high-fidelity, physics-based simulation tailored to single-pilot operations. The new simulator, in conjunction with comprehensive ground-school training, will prepare eVTOL pilots to competently operate their machines in the complex urban environments likely to be the mainstay of the eVTOL air-taxi industry.

CAE’s immersive, synthetic, out-the-window environment combined with a mixed-reality head-mounted display and real cockpit controls and instrumentation, will enable pilots to take advantage of enhanced 3D perception and AI-based digital capabilities to fully engage in the sort of realistic, low-level flying scenarios they’re likely to encounter while ferrying passengers around Chicago’s Loop or New York’s Times Square.

CAE’s Civil Group President Nick Leontidis states: “The CAE 700MXR’s ultra-realistic simulation bridges the gap between the physical and virtual worlds to deliver an unrivalled training experience for future eVTOL pilots. CAE is leading the way, developing advanced technologies and setting the training standard for the eVTOL market, and our innovative approach will ensure faster, more efficient training for pilots."

Volocopter—the German eVTOL manufacturer—and CAE are working together on the development, deployment, and certification of a pilot training program to support the former’s aspiration to provide urban air mobility (UAM) services at the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, France.

Volocopter Chief Commercial Officer Christian Bauer states: “Pilots will play a pivotal role in launching electric air taxi services. We must ensure that the simulators for this new aircraft conform with the highest-quality pilot training in aviation.”

Mr. Leontidis adds: “We look forward to working with the Volocopter team to ensure their pilots receive industry-leading training in the classroom and on the CAE700MXR simulator. Volocopter is a valued partner, and CAE will be there every step of the way to support their entry into service.”

During the 2022 Farnborough International Air Show, CAE will deliver an augmented reality demonstration of its new CAE 700MXR. The undertaking will allow showgoers to experience the 3D perspective of the new flight simulator and explore the innovative features and functionalities of the training device.
