Zenith Aircraft Destroyed After Collision With Another Airplane On The Ground

Amateur-Built Aircraft Impacted A Cessna On Landing

The pilot of an amateur-built Zenith airplane survived a landing accident in which his airplane impacted a twin-engine Cessna at Nevada County Airpark (KGOO) in Grass County, CA Tuesday.

Television Station KOVR reports that, according to witnesses, the pilot of the Zenith CH601 made a hard landing and veered 200 feet off the runway before impacting the parked Cessna on the ramp. The Zenith caught fire and was totally destroyed, but pilot Van Anthony escaped, suffering second- and third-degree burns in the accident.

FAA records indicate that Anthony built the airplane (N99SZ), which was issued an airworthiness certificate on January 22 of this year.

First responders say wind may have played a part in the landing gone awry.

Anthony was being treated at the UC Davis Medical Center for burns and smoke inhalation. Rescue crews said he got away from the airplane "just in time."
